KUU Konjac Sponge [Bamboo Charcoal]

KUU Konjac spongeHappy December, everyone! Are you guys in the festive spirit yet? Have you got all your presents? My christmas season this year is VERY different than last year or any christmases I had so far actually. First of all, I am spending it in New Zealand with my parents, which has not been the case for over 5 years, so I am really excited for that! Second of all, I don’t really have my own space to decorate, which has made it kind of hard to get into the spirit. Also, where are the christmas markets and the Glühwein? On the other hand though, I am really enjoying the warmer temperatures and also looking around for ethical, conscious christmas presents, which is another first for this year. The last months that I have spent in New Zealand I have done a ton of research and tried a few really amazing local (either NZ or Australian) companies, ranging from beauty to makeup or fashion items. So I figured during the next weeks leading up to Christmas, I will share as many of these products here on the blog as I can. Hopefully it will give you either an idea of what to buy for your loved-ones or introduce you to a new company or you might even find something that you really want to try out yourself! 😉 Shopping small and supporting local businesses can be so much fun and I believe that it will be the future of economy, in order to make an effort to save our planet as well as create equal rights for all of us on earth (a girl can dream big, right? 😉 )

Kuu Konjac sponge blackSo the first item I would like to share and which I have been using for a couple of weeks now, is the KUU Konjac sponge- The Black One! If you have not heard of Konjac sponges before, they are basically made from the Konjac plant, which is a traditional Japanese jelly-like health food. 97% of the plant is water and 3% Glucomannan, which is very rich in minerals and therefore amazing for your skin!

About the company

Please view the brand directory entry for Kuu Konjac here. I think the top 3 facts that are important to know about them are:

  1. 100% Natural
  2. Australian owned & packaged
  3. Ethical supply chain: Produced in Korea on a UNESCO World Heritage site

How does the Konjac sponge work?

There are a number of different sponges for different skin types (Check out this very handy resource to find out your skin type). Because i have mixed skin and can be quite breakout prone, I chose the black one, which has added bamboo charcoal. All of the sponges also use 100% food grade Konjac powder with pure water, no preservatives, no colour and no chemicals, which is important because otherwise it would counteract the natural healing power of the minerals in the sponge.

The sponge itself comes with a little band to hang up after using – very practical! All you do is wet it under water, and softly massage your skin!

“The KUU Konjac Sponge gently cleanses and soothes the skin by removing dirt and oil, naturally restoring the pH level of the skin. Cleansing helps to stimulate blood flow and encourage new skin cells, revitalising the complexion without damaging the skin.

The KUU Konjac sponge is highly absorbent in both water and oils and is excellent for thorough cleansing of impurities. The pH level of the sponge is an alkaline and has the function to break down dirt and neautralise acidic and oily areas”

I personally use the sponge every night with a creamy cleanser (currently using this one).

Is it worth it?

YES, YES, definitley YES! I have noticed a HUGE improvement in my skin since I started using it! The appearance of my skin is a lot brighter and I have noticed that my breakouts have reduced as well. Before trying this one, I used the Clarisonic every night, but the Konjac sponge seems to be sooo much better for my particular skin type! So I can highly recommend it!

Benefits of Konjac sponge

Here a are a few more benefits of the Konjac sponge (posted on the back of the packaging)! And look at these cute pictures, which show you how to use it.

As I mentioned, there are different sponges for different skin types (although all of the sponges work great on everyone), but here are the additionaal benefits of the added bamboo charcoal in the black sponge:

“Perfect for those with oily skin prone to acne and outbreaks. The Bamboo Charcoal sponge contains activated carbon & various minerals that enhance absorpsion of excess oil and dirt.

Bamboo Charcoal is also a natural anti- oxidant and so will help fight hard-to-reach, acne causing bacteria, revitalising the complexion and tightening pores.”

I am loving the Konjac sponge and will definitley continue to use it! Considering that it lasts for 2-3 months (remember that it is recyclable- so just add it to your compost or plants), I think the price point of $10.95 is reasonable. I have seen huge improvements in my skin, it is easy to use, easy to clean and easy to store, which are all big bonuses for me!

Are any of you currently using or have used a Konjac sponge before? What do you think? I am super interested to hear from you. Maybe you have tried one for a different skin type? Let me know!

Wishing you all a wonderful Holiday season,

PS: While I love talking about natural, ethical (and especially local) products, I am also always conflicted about consumerism- which I am really not a big fan of! Also, I linked a blog post on my Facebook page, from another amazing green blogger talking about it. Especially during this time of the year, where everyone is buying like crazy, I think it is an important subject to keep in mind – more to come soon!
