Happy Earth Day, everyone! I shared a link earlier on my Facebook page, which talked about 10 little, easy things that everyone can do to celebrate this day and help to make an impact in keeping our beautiful earth alive. Well, really you should be doing these things everyday, but hey…baby steps are the key here. Anyway, then I also saw this video from the super cool Lauren and it reminded me that I haven’t shared with you guys yet my current toothbrush and razor (Don’t worry I took the pictures before I started using them!). They aren’t any toothbrush and razor, they are made from recycled yogurt cups – pretty cool, right? And also very Earth Day appropriate because the amount of waste we produce is rapidly becoming one of the biggest problems on this planet.
- Made with LOVE and recycled yogurt cups
- Handle created with 100% recycled plastic; bristles are new nylon
- Easy-to-grip curved handle
- Tiered bristles for gentle, thorough cleaning
- Includes reusable travel case
- Toothbrush recycling program
Preserve consulted closely with dental professionals to create a toothbrush that gets your teeth cleaner but minimizes your impact on the environment. The design includes a curved handle for those hard-to-reach places and a three-level bristle arrangement to massage your gums. And while the bristles are brand new, the handle is made from recycled yogurt cups. The reusable, clear Travel Case features ventilation holes and a cap to keep your toothbrush clean and dry wherever you take it or store it.
I bought the toothbrush in a medium strength (is that what it is called?) and really liked it. The curve of the handle takes a little while to get used to, but is actually very cleverly designed! It lasted me like every other toothbrush as well ( you are meant to changed them out every 3 months I believe or when you have been sick) and the price point of NZ$6.60 is think is reasonably as well, considering you are supporting a really great company here and are helping the planet as well. So I would definitely recommend it. Also, this toothbrush currently found a second (or 3rd I guess?) life as part of my cleaning tools…so there is another recycle tip 😉

This BPA free Triple Razor comes with two replacement blades and has an ergonomic handle that is 100% recycled #5 plastic and completely recyclable after use. Package is reusable as a travel case and made from renewable wood sources. Available in assorted colors.
Unfortunately I did not love this one as much as the toothbrush, simply due to the fact that the razor blade would not stay attached to the handle. As you can see in the second picture, the razor blade clips into the end of the handle, however the little plastic bits did not seem to hold it too well and it would continuously fall out while I was shaving. My mum however has the same razor and she has absolutely no issues with it, so maybe mine was just faulty, or I broke it while attaching the blade (quite likely considering my impatience when having to assemble things). The prize point is actually quite good and I don;t think much different to non-eco razors: NZ$13.58. Especially considering that the blades lasted a lot longer than other ones I have used and you then just have to repurchase the blades not the entire razor. So overall, I would still recommend you trying it out – just be careful when you first attach the blade to the handle.
Where to buy
I bought both at Naturally Organic, one of my favourite natural health stores in New Zealand. Where else you can buy products from this brand (they make some cool kitchen things as well) and more information in general, click here to get to their page in the Brand Directory.
I hope that this post showed you that little things, which you use daily anyway, can make a HUGE impact on our environment (aka our home). I know, we often think (me included) that little things like changing our toothbrush doesn’t matter, but imagine the amount of waste we could reduce if all 7 billion of us would only use recycled toothbrushes. Also, for me, this is about awareness. Often we don’t even know which alternatives to the typical products that are so used to, are out there. Companies like Preserve truly deserve our attention, because the more we support the earth-friendly ones, the less we give the earth-destroying ones a chance!
